EMR vs EHR - What is the Difference?

People often use EMR and EHR as the same thing, but they are not identical. EMR is the digital version of a patient's chart within one hospital or clinic - it replaces the old paper file with vitals, prescriptions, lab reports & discharge summaries stored electronically under a UHID. EHR takes this a step further - it is designed to move beyond a single facility, so that a patient's health information can be securely viewed & shared with other authorized hospitals & doctors, usually with the help of ABDM standards and the patient's ABHA-based consent. In short, every EHR starts as an EMR, but not every EMR is automatically an EHR unless it is made shareable across the health ecosystem.
